My Running Journey

Hi I’m Susie, an avid runner and RRCA certified running coach. I’ve been running on some level for most of my life, but I first started training more seriously during high school cross country. I joined the team when I realized I wasn’t actually that great at soccer, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

I ran my first marathon in 2017 just after graduating from college. I made countless beginner mistakes, hit “the wall,” and painfully shuffled over the finish line. Almost immediately after, I started thinking about all of the things I could change to do better next time, and I was hooked.

I signed up for a second marathon in 2018. I bought a GPS watch, trained harder, improved on my previous mistakes, and improved my time by 19 minutes to qualify for the Boston Marathon. I was ecstatic, but still I thought, what if I did this next time? Could I get faster?

I’ve now run ten marathons, and over time I became more and more interested in the science and theory behind training. The more I understood the why behind each aspect of training, the more my performance improved, and my marathon time dropped from 3:40 to 2:52. With each training cycle, I’ve learned more about the marathon and how to train and race smarter. I’ve also had so much fun along the way.

I started Shakeout Street Running to share what I’ve learned and help others achieve their own running goals. Running has improved my life in so many ways. If I can help one person experience the incredible sense of joy, community, and accomplishment that I’ve found through running, then I’ll have accomplished my goal.

I coach all levels of runners, from taking on your first 5k, to tackling the half marathon, to improving your marathon time to qualify for Boston (and beyond).

Why “Shakeout Street?”

A shakeout run is a short, easy run typically done the day before a race. The intention is to help you loosen up, get the blood flowing, and get some of the pre-race nerves out. Before large races, there are often group shakeout runs where runners can come together as a community and chat about their goals and fears for the upcoming race. They’re some of my favorite runs because they’re fun and everyone is excited about the next day’s potential.

I’m also a self-proclaimed deadhead. For some reason, whenever I do a shakeout run, the song Shakedown Street always pops into my head.

When thinking about my goals and intentions for coaching, I wanted to help runners achieve their goals and find the joy in running. In addition, I dreamed of creating an inclusive, uplifting, warm, and fun community of runners who support each other through the process. I realized the environment I wanted to create was not too dissimilar from the culture that formed around the Grateful Dead’s music (well, except for the hard partying). It felt fitting to call my business Shakeout Street to combine my loves for running, the music, and community.

Outside of running

I live in the greater Philadelphia area with my husband Sean (my first trainee) and our black lab, Gus. When I’m not running, you can find me walking with Gus, reading (usually fantasy, historical fiction, or romantasy), cooking vegan food that you wouldn’t know is vegan, baking, traveling, or occasionally dabbling in triathlon.
